PORTAGE — The Cheesemakers ended the regular season on a solid note with a sweep of Portage in the Badger Conference Challenge Oct. 11, 25-16, 25-13, 25-21.
“Monroe started out a little slow but quickly got in a groove to take the match,” Cheesemakers coach Heidi Witt said. “Everyone was able to play, which was nice to do before heading into the postseason.”
Zoee Pond led the Cheesemakers with 10 kills while Cassi Gersbach added nine kills and three blocks. Lexi Davis had four aces and five digs, Bri Seagreaves finished with three aces and Lily Frehner dished out 23 assists.
“We were due for a win and we were glad to get it before next week where everyone starts with a clean slate,” Witt said.
Monroe earned the No. 11 seed in the WIAA Division 2 playoff bracket and was slated to travel to 6-seeded Richland Center Tuesday.
“We played Richland Center in the regional last year but we are hoping for a better outcome. It’s definitely something we can do, we just have to play our game,” Witt said.
A win would catapult the Cheesemakers into the regional semifinal to play either Platteville (3) on the road or Lodi (14) at home Thursday.
