STOUGHTON — The Cheesemakers went 1-1 at the Stoughton Tournament Dec. 30-31, 2021.
On Dec. 30, Milton won 7-5 against Monroe. The Red Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over 13 minutes into the game, but the Cheesemakers scored three-straight to go ahead 3-1. Milton then scored the next five goals to pull ahead 6-3.
Nathan Ratke and Blaze Janecke each had two goals for Monroe, while Benjamin Erdley added another. Cash Anderson, Aidan Grey, Josh Haight and Carson Kurschner each had assists for the Cheesemakers. Milton outshot Monroe 30-29.
The next day the Cheesemakers defeated the Madison Lakers 4-0. Blaze Janecke had two goals, with Anderson and Carter Nemergut also adding goals. Erdley and Patrick Alt had assists. Monroe outshot Madison 65-14.
The Cheesemakers were set to host Beaver Dam and Sauk Prairie Jan. 4 and 6.
Fury go 0-2-1 at Chippewa Falls tourney
CHIPPEWA FALLS — The Rock County Fury tied Eau Claire Stars 2-2 on Dec. 28 at the Chippewa Falls Tournament, but lost to Hayward 4-1 the same day and were defeated 6-2 the next day against Black River Falls.
Monroe’s Marlies Brandli scored the opening goal of the game against BRF unassisted and just 46 seconds after first puck drop. Black River Falls then scored the next six goals, with Brandli adding a second goal with less than two minutes to play in the third.
The Fury were outshot 46-36 against BRF, and 54-7 versus Hayward.
Rock County (4-6-1) open the 2022 portion of the schedule at Fond du Lac Jan. 5 and then at Baraboo Jan. 7 before hosting Viroqua at the Janesville Ice Arena Jan. 8.
2022 U18 Women’s Worlds canceled
SWEDEN — With the IIHF announcing Dec. 24 the cancellation of its six championships that begin in January 2022, including the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, USA Hockey issued the following statement:
“While we respect the decision of the IIHF Council to cancel the six men’s and women’s world championships that begin in January, we’re heartbroken for the athletes and staff associated with our U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team who have been working so hard to prepare for the chance to compete for a gold medal. We know how disappointing this news is for not only our team, but all those preparing to compete in the various world championships across the world.”
Of those on the Team USA U-18 roster is Orangeville, Ill. senior Tessa Janecke.
