Monroe falls on the road; Ponies, O’s snag wins

SALEM — The Cheesemakers struggled in a 60-34 nonconference loss to Westosha Central Dec. 21. 

Monroe junior guard Taylor Jacobson hit five 3-pointers and was 3-for-4 from the free throw line, adding up to a team-high 20 points on the night. Also scoring for Monroe were Sydney Conway, who finished with five points, and Allison Wunschel, who added a 3-pointer for the Cheesemakers.

Ellie Reynolds led Westosha with 15 points, and teammate Riley Spencer added 13 for the hosts.

Up next for Monroe (0-7) is a nonconference away game Dec. 28 at Platteville, followed by a nonconference matchup at home Dec. 31 against Freeport.

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights took on one of the top teams in the state and hung tight throughout most of the game. However, the second-ranked Pointers pulled away late, outscoring New Glarus 32-20 in the second half of their nonconference game Dec. 20.

Lindsey Schadewalt had 18 points and five rebounds to lead New Glarus. Mallory Lindsey had 22 points to lead Mineral Point, while teammate Kennedy Wenger added 17. Katelyn Cox tallied 15 boards for the Pointers, which out-rebounded New Glarus 34-20. The Knights also had 27 turnovers to Mineral Point’s 19. 

The Pointers shot 6 of 25 from deep and were 18 of 25 from the free throw line. New Glarus was just 5-for-12 from the line and 3-for-11 on 3-pointers.


Monticello 39, 

Williams Bay 32

MONTICELLO — The Ponies took a one-point lead into halftime and prevailed with a seven-point victory in a nonconference game Dec. 21.

“My team made some great adjustments at halftime and came out and played better defense in the second half,” Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said.

The Ponies allowed just 12 points in the second half. Ellie Gustafson led Monticello with 28 points, including three, 3-pointers and 12 baskets from inside the arc. 

“She drove to the basket to create a lot of her shots and her teammates did a good job finding her, too,” Brokopp said.


Orangeville 49, 

Juda 15

ORANGEVILLE — Jackie Nusbaum had six points in the second half and Anna Skoumal added four in the first half for the Panthers, which struggled from the start in a nonconference game at Orangeville Dec. 20.

The host Broncos led 22-3 after the first quarter and 33-7 by halftime. Juda scored a single bucket in the third quarter.


Argyle 77, 

Palmyra-Eagle 39

ARGYLE — The Orioles had three players score more than 20 points in a blowout win over Palmyra-Eagle in a nonconference game Dec. 21.

Grace Ganshert led all scorers with 26 points, while Maggie Godfrey tallied 24 and Alyssa Stadola 21. Godfrey added 19 rebounds, five assists, five blocks and eight steals to her tally on the night. Ganshert had 16 boards, five assists and three steals. Stadola added five steals and four boards.
