PORTAGE — After starting the season 1-8 the Monroe Cheesemaker baseball team is on a three-game winning streak after defeating Portage 8-6 on Tuesday, May 2.
A five-run fifth helped Monroe secure the win. Portage’s first relief pitcher Aidan Warfield walked four straight batters. He then struck out the side, but Landon Stelter reached on a dropped third strike to extend the inning.
With runners on first and third, Drew Indergand lined a single to right. Cole Meighan was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Keegan Dahmen drew a five-pitch walk, giving Monroe a 7-4 lead. The inning ended on a Tucker Markham fly ball to left.
Dahmen and Markham went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate, while Ethan Rosenstiel picked up the win. He pitched four innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked one. Braden Rupnow threw three innings of relief to earn the save.
Pecatonica remains undefeated
BLANCHARDVILLE — Pecatonica, ranked No. 3 in Division 4, improved to 13-0 with a 6-5 win over Darlington on Tuesday, May 2. The Vikings scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on Carson Kurschner’s two-RBI double.
Tyler McKeon and Lukas Rue tallied two hits each for Pecatonica. Kurschner, whose RBIs proved to be the game winners, also collected the win. He pitched two innings of relief for starter Rue.
The Redbirds recorded six hits, all singles from six different players. Breylin Goebel and Reagan Jackson scored twice, while Gage Banfield drove in two runs. Banfield suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits.
NG holds off Belleville
NEW GLARUS — The Knights halted a seventh-inning rally by the Wildcats, squeaking out an 8-7 win on Tuesday, May 2.
New Glarus broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run second. Patrick Alt drew a bases loaded walk to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. Ethan Friedrich added on with a sacrifice fly to right. With bases loaded once again, Matt Roth delivered a two-RBI single to left. Owen Palmer then scampered home on an error by the third baseman.
In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats recorded three straight hits to score a run. The Knights then exchanged an out for a run, but an error on Jake Roth allowed another run to score. Leyton Mihlbauer escaped the inning by inducing a lineout to right fielder Dylan Fritz.
Easton Dreyfus, Matt Roth and Alt tallied two hits each, while Alt drove in a team-best four runs. He also collected the win, scattering 10 hits for four earned runs.
Jefferson shuts out Brodhead-Juda
JEFFERSON — The Cardinals dipped below .500 with a 7-0 loss to Jefferson on Tuesday, May 2.
Aidyn Vondra went 2-for-4 with a triple, accounting for one-third of Brodhead-Juda’s hits. Clayton Elloitt suffered the loss. He gave up three earned runs on five hits, striking out four but also walking four.
Monticello-Albany suffers two losses
MONTICELLO — The Ponies mustered just three hits in their 11-0 loss to Barneveld on Monday, May 1. Those three hits came from Brayden Bakken, Tyler Patchen and Aidan Harvey. Bakken suffered the loss. He gave up four earned runs on 11 hits.
On Tuesday, May 2, Max Godfrey and Will Helfvogt combined to throw a one-hit, 3-0 win over Argyle.
Ike Waage led the Oriole offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Godfrey collected the win, striking out 12 of 18 batters faced. Helfvogt, who tallied the lone RBI, pitched two innings of relief to earn the save.
Cody Pryce accounted for Monticello-Albany’s only hit. He also suffered the loss on the bump, giving up two earned runs on four hits. He struck out five but also walked five.
Barneveld one-hits Black Hawk
SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors are still searching for their first win of the 2023 season, as Black Hawk fell to Barneveld 8-0 on Tuesday, May 2. Brett Haldiman tallied the Warriors’s only hit. Carter Baumgartner suffered the loss, giving up one earned run on four hits. He struck out five and walked two.
