Sugar River caps third straight Capitol Conference title with shutout of Heights

MONROE — The Cheesemakers closed out their home slate with a pair of nonconference draws. Monroe tied Janesville Parker 2-2 May 20 at Honey Creek Park, and then pulled even against Edgerton the next day.

Against Parker (0-12-2), the two teams went into halftime tied at 1. 

Alexa Bader had a goal and an assist with three shots on goal for Monroe (0-15-3). Anika Einbeck assisted Bader’s goal, while Kourtney Walker scored on Bader’s assist.

Goalkeeper Anna Latimer had three saves in net.

Against Edgerton (7-6-2), Zoe Pond scored twice and Bader scored the third goal. Einbeck had two assists and Latimer finished with six saves in goal.

Monroe’s final regular season game was scheduled for May 23 at Big Foot/Williams Bay (10-4-0). The Cheesemakers will travel to sixth-ranked McFarland (15-0-2) May 30 in the regional round of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs. Earlier this season McFarland beat Monroe 11-0.

Sugar River 2, Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld 0

BELLEVILLE — The eighth-ranked Raiders improved to 16-1-4 overall finished the Capitol Conference schedule with a perfect 7-0 record after a May 21 win over the Vanguards. 

Karstyn Rossing scored the first goal of the game for Sugar River in the 11th minute, and Rylee Hubbard added the dagger with less than two minutes to play. 

Rachael Heittola had just one save in net for the Raiders — her 18th clean sheet of the season. Heittola and Sugar River’s defense have allowed just four goals all season, two of which came in the season-opening loss to third-ranked Madison Edgewood.

The win capped the third-straight conference title for Sugar River. The Raiders didn’t allow a goal in conference play the entire season.

Sugar River’s final game of the regular season was a nonconference match against DeForest scheduled for May 23. The Raiders open the WIAA Division 3 postseason with a home game against Cambridge-Deerfield. Earlier this season, Sugar River defeated C-D 5-0.
