EDGERTON — Monroe’s girls track & field team finished second and the boys were third at the Tider Invitational May 3.
“I was very pleased with the girls performance as a team and individually,” coach Eric Jubeck said. Monroe finished less than five points ahead of Platteville and just short of 19 behind team champion Elkhorn in the girls meet. Platteville won the boys title, with Elkhorn finishing second, five points ahead of Monroe.
“Cammi Ganshert’s quad was a little tight, so we held her out, knowing we have business to take care of the next couple of weeks. We challenged the girls to rise to the occasion without the 20-30 points she would have scored, and they absolutely accepted the challenge,” Jubeck said.
While Monroe had a slew of athletes finish in the top-8 in their events to score points, Cassi Gersbach impressed the most in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 48.26 seconds — 3.4 seconds faster than second place Hailey Murphy of Whitewater.
“Cassi’s 300 hurdle time puts her at fourth in Division 2 at this point in the year,” said Jubeck.
Monroe’s 800-meter relay team took second (1:52.29), and the field events helped carry the team to their second-place billing. Faith Koester was second in the high jump at 4-feet, 10-inches, just an inch off the pace of the event champion. Chloe Bunker won the shot put by a foot (39-01) and Riley Hartwig was third (36-09).
“Our best effort as a whole team is up at this point in the year,” Jubeck said. “This meet had six of the seven teams that are in our regional or sectional (besides Elkhorn, which is in Division 1), so it was a great measuring stick for us. We scored points in all 18 events, which is an accomplishment and showing of the depth of our team. Chloe Bunker had the best day of her track career — with a shot put of 39-01 and discus throw of 114-02. She’s performing at the level we need her to and peaking the right time.”
On the boys side, Jordan Montgomery won the 100 (11.06) and the 200 (22.64). Dylan Fahrney was second in the 800 (2:05.37) and Kyle Legler was second in the 1,600 (4:41.50).
Trevor Rodebaugh won the 110-high hurdles (15.69) and was second in the 300 hurdles (42.04), losing by just 1/100th of a second to Elkhorn’s Chris Sattler.
The Cheesemakers finished second in the 400-relay and fourth in the 800 and 3,200 relays.
