MONROE — Baraboo won the Monroe Doubles Tournament by a narrow margin April 16, with the host Cheesemakers finishing second.

“It was a little disappointing that Whitewater dropped out of the tournament late, and Jefferson was also unable to field an entire team. However, when we got to the final round of matches between Monroe and Baraboo, the matches were incredible,” said Monroe head coach Matt Bordner. “It was fun for our guys to see they can compete with Baraboo who we expect to be in the top half of the conference. I know our guys will definitely be looking forward to seeing them again later in the season and hopefully closing out some of the close matches a little bit better.”

At No. 1 doubles, Monroe sent two pairs into the tournament, with singles players Matthew Setterstrom and Ryan Mathiason teaming up in one tandem, and regular No. 1 doubles pair of Aaron Roidt and Chris Giasson filling the other spot.

Setterstrom and Mathiason went unbeaten on the day.

“At the 1A flight (each team’s top two singles players partnered up to play doubles together), Matthew and Ryan won in a really exciting match versus two solid Baraboo players,” Bordner said. “Matthew came up with some big serves down the stretch and played out some really nice points. I was also happy to get Ryan more experience up near the net and it was great to see him getting more comfortable with his volleys and overheads.”

Roidt and Giasson lost to Baraboo’s Will Davies and George Stelling 6-1, 6-3.

“Chris and Aaron dropped their first match of the season,” Bordner said. “They started out the match jumping up 40-love in the first game but couldn’t close out that initial game, and then just struggled to win the big points down the stretch. It was overall a close match, but I think it’s one that Chris and Aaron will be really excited to get a rematch with these guys later in the season. I think we started playing more consistent tennis in the 2nd set, but just too many unforced errors cost us throughout the match.”

At No. 2 doubles for Monroe were Ethan Towne and Wes Saunders, with Gavin Eckerman and Max Pettitjean playing No. 3 doubles and Tim Olson and Dante Giordano playing No. 4 doubles.

“Ethan and Wes partnered up and played extremely well together. This was the best match I’ve seen Ethan play, and I think Ethan and Wes are pretty compatible with each other and their playing styles,” Bordner said. “Gavin and Max partnered up and played really well in the first set. Baraboo came out in the second set and had better shot placement and were giving us problems on returns. I think one area for our guys to keep focusing on is getting more first serves in, as they were able to control more points on our second serves.

“At 4-doubles, Tim and Dante played a really solid match and especially in the second set they were able to control the pace and just played smart tennis.”
