SAUK CITY — The Cheesemakers participated in the Sauk Relays April 22, waiting out the inclement weather and finishing as champions in the boys standings and second for girls. Placing second on the boys side was defending state champion Lodi.
“When things line up right at a track meet, the final race of the night, the 4-by-400 relay, determines the meet winner, which is what happened,” Monroe boys coach Scott Mosher said.
Jordan Klocke, the 1,600-meter relay alternate on the boys side, filled in beautifully for his teammate, Mosher said. Klocke handed the baton to JT Seagreaves, who put Monroe out to a big lead, and Jakar Broitzman and Lucas Sathoff closed out the race. The win in the event — the final of the night — pushed the Cheesemakers ahead of Lodi by three points in the standings for the championship.
“It was great to be able to get in a competition, as we’ve had a few meets canceled due to the weather. We are definitely behind where we want to be at this time of the season, but considering the difficulty in getting in quality practices and competitions that makes sense. The boys know they have a lot of work to do between now and Conference and the postseason, and I think they will be up for the challenge,” Mosher said.
Other first place winners on the boys side included the Throwers Shuttle Relay team of Hunter Karch, Austin Fuchs and Sean Rufenacht; the High Jump Relay of Seagreaves, Charlie Wiegel and Caden Blum; and the Sprint Relay team of Seagreaves, Wiegel, Klocke and Sathoff.
On the girls side, Monroe won the 800-sprint medley with Sophie McGuire, Chloe Fry, Sierra McGuire and Aleigh Zettle champions by just under a second. Brenna Aebly, Danica Altman and Lola Parga won the shuttle hurdle race by .95 seconds over Lodi. Sophie McGuire and Zettle finished 1-2 in the pole vault at 8-feet, with Sierra McGuire tied for third at 7-6.
Jim Church Invitational
BRODHEAD — Host Brodhead-Juda won the girls team title at the annual Jim Church Invitational April 22, with McFarland finishing second. The two schools swapped positions in the boys standings. Black Hawk was seventh for boys and girls, while Albany was sixth in the girls ranking and eighth for the boys.
“The weather cooperated enough that we were able to get the meet in. Even with the weather, we had several kids still establish new personal bests. I was very pleased that our kids went to a meet with larger schools and realized they could compete with them,” said Eric Erickson, Black Hawk’s coach.
