Indoor meets open season for local teams

DUBUQUE — Before the snow could melt away area track and field teams opened the spring season with indoor meets March 15-16.

The Cheesemakers girls team competed at the University of Dubuque High School Indoor Classic March 15. Cammi Ganshert was third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.43 seconds, breaking her own previous record by 2/100ths of a second. Faith Koester had a high jump of 5-feet, tying for third. Monroe’s 800-meter relay team of Abby Price, Emma Sanders, Koester and Ganshert took eighth with a time of 1:56.85.

“As a team, we scored 13.5 points, placing 12th out of 23,” Monroe coach Eric Jubeck said. “It was a very promising start with our athletes working hard and showing great promise for the season. It was nice to give some of our younger athletes opportunities to compete in a beautiful facility.”

Dubuque’s boys meet was held March 16, and Monroe’s Jordan Montgomery finished second in the 55-dash with a time of 6.65 seconds, just 1/100th out of first. Montgomery was also eighth in the 400.

Sophomore Trevor Rodebaugh was third in the 55-hurdles finals with a time of 8.18 seconds. Cade Meyer, also a sophomore, was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 10-inches. Freshman JT Seagreaves was eighth (5-08).

The Cheesemakers’ 3,200 relay team of Trevor Boll, Jake Brower, Dylan Fahrney and Kyle Legler was sixth (8:57.58). 

The University of Platteville held its annual Tri-State Invitational, with schools and athletes separated by school size (large, small).

Darlington’s Parker Fitzsimons was sixth in the 55-dash (7.03). Payton Heinberg was third in the 800 (2:13.25), Tucker Lange was third in the 3,200 (11:35.78), while teammate Bailey Schwartz (11:47.20) was fifth. The Redbirds 800-relay team of Carson Evenstad, Easton Evenstad, Parker Fitzsimons and Trae Schilling were seventh (1:44.35). Leif Bredeson was third in the shot put (42-03), and teammate Matthew Douglas was fifth (40-06). Darlington’s boys squad finished sixth of 22 teams.

Monticello’s 3,200-relay team of Sam Allard, Braylon Hoesly, Simon Blohowiak and Logan Blum finished seventh (10:04.34), while Pete Gustafson was seventh in the high jump (5-06).

Sugar River’s Caden O’Rourke was seventh in the 800 (2:16.27), and Sean McDermott was eighth in the 55-hurdles (10.32). The Raiders’ 3,200-relay team of Sean Campbell, O’Rourke, Conor McCoy and Aiden Runkle was sixth (10:03.90). Jacob Shrader was sixth in the high jump (5-08) for Sugar River, teammate Robert Chenoweth was seventh in the pole vault (9-06), and Jjay Wenger was seventh in the long jump (18-01).

On the girls side, Albany’s Kaitlyn Trow was seventh in the 55-dash (8.14), and the Comets’ 800-relay team of Trow, Madison Peters, Kristin O’Bel and Madysen Conway took third (2:02.8). Peters, O’Bel, Trow and Payton Wachholz were fifth in the 1,600-relay (4:39.38), and Megan Anderson, Kaiya Zurfluh, Wachholz and Peters were fourth in the 3,200-relay (12:31.8). Libby Beck was second in the shot put (34-11).

Sugar River’s Kiara Donnell was second in the 55-dash (7.66), just 1/100th behind Lodi’s Rhianna Walzer. Monticello’s Alyssen Noriega was third (7.68), while Darlington’s Kathleen Mathias was fifth (7.87). Noriega was second in the 200 (28.51). Mathias was fifth in the long jump (14-02). Karley Michels of Sugar River was fourth in the 3,200 (14:43.38), and Darlington runners Brooke Douglas (15:29.91) was sixth and Grace Douglas (15:53.94) was seventh. The Raiders’ 800- and 3,200-relay teams were fifth. Sugar River sophomore Kyla Jerome was fifth in the pole vault (7-00), and Haiden Zimmerman was eighth in shot put (30-08).

Darlington’s Ilse Mendez was third in the 800 (2:41.63), Morgan Black was seventh in the 1,600 (6:28.59), and Lizzie Schwartz was sixth in the 55-hurdles (10.46). The Redbirds’ 1,600-relay team was eighth. Marissa Gould was fifth in the shot put (32-10).

In the large school side, Brodhead-Juda’s Jeff Williams was third in the 55-dash (6.75) and first in the 200 dash (24.14). Jacob Staffon was sixth in the 800 (2:20.70). Freshman Josiah Engen was fifth in the high jump (5-08), Royce Brauer was second in the triple jump (41-04), and Zach Loffelholtz was eighth in shot put (39-01). The Cardinals’ 3,200-relay boys team was eighth.

On the girls side, Brodhead-Juda’s Nicole Kamholz was fourth in the 400 (1:06.89), Madelyn McIntyre was the champion in the 800 (2:34.06) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:40.34). Rhianna Teubert was seventh in the 55-hurdles (10.38), and first in the pole vault (8-00). Teammate Taylor Midthun was sixth in the pole vault (7-00). The 3,200-relay team was seventh.
