Ganshert perfect for Orioles vs. Black Hawk

SOUTH WAYNE — Grace Ganshert was perfect on the mound and nearly perfect at the plate for Argyle May 17, which defeated Black Hawk 10-0 in five innings.

Ganshert finished the game by recording 14 of the 15 outs via the strikeout. She needed just 58 pitches to get through the five innings, in which she didn’t allow a single baserunner. Offensively, Ganshert was 2-for-3 with three steals, a walk, RBI and two runs from the leadoff spot.  

Argyle took advantage of seven Black Hawk errors. The Orioles scored three runs in the first and two more in the second. In the fourth inning, Argyle scratched two more on the board, and made it 10-0 in the top of the fifth inning.

Megan Johnson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Jenny Helfvogt had two hits, three RBIs and a double, and Oliva Isely added an RBI and a double. Hannah Gierhardt had two hits and two runs as well for the Orioles.

Ellie Edler took the loss from the pitcher’s circle for Black Hawk, allowing six earned runs with three strikeouts, two walks, a hit batter and 12 hits in five innings of work.


Barneveld 17, Monticello-New Glarus 0

BARNEVELD — The Ponies were 1-hit in against the Eagles May 17. 

In the top of the fifth inning with one out, Alivia Palmer broke up Nicole Fahey’s bid for a perfect game with a walk. Two batters later, Megan Peterson, pinch hitting with two outs, squared up a double to end the no-hit bid. Two pitches after that, Fahey got Katelyn Eyler to ground out to end the game. 

Fahey finished the game with five strikeouts, then went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and five RBIs. RaeAnne Leister had a grand slam in the second.

Barneveld scored seven runs in the first inning and 10 in the second. Harley Disch took the loss on the mound for MNG.


Cuba City 7, Darlington 0

DARLINGTON — Greta Volkening had three singles in the leadoff spot, but the Redbirds were unable to capitalize in their game May 17 against the Cubans.

Cuba City scored a run in each of the first three innings, then tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh for insurance.

Cayla Golackson had two hits, and Darlington had eight in total against Cubans pitcher Delaney Ryan. Ryan didn’t walk a batter in the game and struck out nine.

Josie Thomas pitched four innings for Darlington, and Sophie Wiegel tossed three in relief, allowing just one run.
