MADISON — Charlie Frehner snagged a win at No. 4 singles, but the Cheesemakers lost 6-1 to Edgewood April 23.

“It was a beautiful day for tennis. Charlie Frehner played an excellent match at 4 singles to secure our lone victory,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said.

Frehner defeated Edgewood’s Matt Wheeler 6-2, 6-4.

“This was the first match for the boys where we won a flight against Edgewood at the varsity level in several years, so it was certainly exciting for Charlie to secure that match. His match was freshman versus freshman, and Charlie just played really tough. His mental focus for a freshman athlete is very impressive,” Bordner said.

Bo Bahler and Chris Andraski were swept 6-0, 6-0 each in the No. 1 and 2 singles matches. Gabe Moon fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Bahler lost to sophomore Alex Sviatoslavsky, who finished in the top-8 at state in Division 2 in 2018. Andraski’s loss was to Edgewood sophomore Donovan Pfaff, who also reached state as a freshman a year ago.

“Our No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles were certainly outmatched by superior players. Gabe competed well at No. 3 singles against a solid opponent,” Bordner said.

In doubles, Evan Thompson and Luke Quinn fell 6-1, 6-2 in top flight, while Wade Sweeney and Jon Callaway lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Heath Bear and Tim Beckman were blanked in the No. 3 singles match, 6-0, 6-0.

“Our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles brought a lot of energy, but (were) still not consistent enough. They are definitely improving though and heading in the right direction,” Bordner said. “Our No. 3 doubles has been a spot that we are looking for some players to rise up. We have about six guys who are all in the mix for No. 3 doubles, and so we will be competing pretty hard at these upcoming matches to see who can stand out and fill this void. I think the competition will lead to all of our players improving and hopefully two clear-cut players that will round out our lineup.”
