Conference play kicks off in south Wisconsin

BELOIT — Despite a three-set loss to Turner, Monroe showed toughness in its Rock Valley Conference opener Sept. 5.

“It was a very hard-fought match tonight,” Monroe head coach Cassie Wittman said. “The girls were very competitive and gritty. We just couldn’t quite finish each set.”

Monroe fell 25-21, 25-19, 28-26. Riley Nicholson and Mya Wild were key at the service line, combining for six of the team’s 10 aces. Olivia Feller propelled the offense with five kills, hitting .333. Libero Kennedy Voegeli kept plays alive with eight digs, while Wild distributed the offense with 11 assists.


ARGYLE 3, ALBANY 1

ARGYLE — Aces were the difference in the Orioles’ conference-opening win over the Comets on Sept. 5. Argyle won in four sets — 23-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 — with the help of 22 aces.

Brooke Wellnitz led the way with six aces, 16 kills and 15 digs. 


MONTICELLO 3, 

BLACK HAWK 1

SOUTH WAYNE — The Ponies, now 2-0 in Six Rivers East league play, made a statement in their four-set win over the Warriors on Sept. 5. Monticello won 25-18, 22-25, 25-19 and stifled Black Hawk in the fourth set 25-9.

Aces were a large factor in the win, as Sylvia Wahl, Audrianna Schraumegal, Kennadee Johnson and Dalana Trumpy had four each. Jillian Ryan was a big presence at the net with at least six blocks, while Johnson and Trumpy led in regular kills.

Black Hawk’s trio of Mya Milz, Maddy Lange and Keira Brunner were statistical leaders. Milz had four aces and five digs, Lange tallied six kills with two blocks, and Brunner registered eight assists and two saves.

In other local volleyball, New Glarus fell to Cambridge 25-12, 25-21, 25-11 and Pecatonica dropped a three-set match to Barneveld.
