MONTICELLO — After suffering back-to-back losses to start the new year, Albany-Monticello (17-2, 5-1 Six Rivers East) has found its way. The Comets’ latest victory, which extended their winning streak to six games, was a 68-45 conference contest against Black Hawk (7-10, 2-4) on Friday, Jan. 26.
A quartet of Comets finished in double figures, led by Dalana Trumpy with 14 points. Alana Durtschi and Molly Olson added 12 points each, while Avary Briggs tallied 11. The squad made seven baskets beyond the arc for 21 of their points. Maddy Lange bolstered Black Hawk with 18 points.
“We have definitely improved over the course of the season, and I think the experience should help us close out the season strong,” Black Hawk head coach Steve Herbst said. “The effort and determination are there. They just have to apply the skills they have to the court against higher pressure teams.”
Both squads have just two conference games left. Albany-Monticello’s conference championship hopes are still alive, but the team would need to defeat Argyle-Pecatonica (17-1, 5-0) and Barneveld (8-9, 2-3) for a share. The Comets handled the Eagles 49-28 just over a week ago, but fell to the No. 2-ranked Orioles 55-47 in early January. The rematch between Albany-Monticello, ranked No. 4 in Division 5, and Argyle-Pecatonica is slated for Tuesday, Feb. 6.
NEW GLARUS 62, MARSHALL 33
MARSHALL — The No. 8-ranked Glarner Knights (16-2, 6-0 Capitol South) used 19 steals to generate offense against the Cardinals (8-12, 0-6) in a conference matchup on Friday, Jan. 26. Payton Schneider and Bella Brenkman led the way with five steals each.
Offensively, Lindsey Schadewalt tallied 31 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. She was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. Elle Lancaster also finished in double figures with 10 points, also going 4-for-4 from the stripe. As a team, New Glarus was 13-for-17 on free-throw opportunities.
BRODHEAD 55, JEFFERSON 42
JEFFERSON — With a career-high 27 points from Addison Yates, the Cardinals (12-6, 6-3 RVC) knocked off the Eagles (7-10, 3-6) in a conference crossover contest on Friday, Jan. 26.
Yates finished 4-for-5 from beyond the arc with seven rebounds. Allie Dahl added another 22 points with five steals and a team-best nine rebounds. Yates and Onnika Williams also contributed on the glass with seven and six boards, respectively.
CLINTON 58, MONROE 53
CLINTON — Despite a halftime lead, the Cheesemakers (1-15, 0-8 RVC) dropped a conference crossover game to the Cougars (3-14, 1-8) on Friday, Jan. 26. Monroe grabbed 24 offensive boards, leading to 16 second-chance points, but turnovers plagued the team once again. Clinton forced 26 turnovers, scoring 18 points off Cheesemaker errors.
Abbey Matley led the Cheese with 13 points and 17 rebounds for a double-double before fouling out of the game. Sophie Golembiewski and Anastasia Lattin grabbed seven boards each.
In other local girls basketball action, Barneveld defeated Juda (1-16, 0-6) 71-16 on Friday, Jan. 26.
