MONROE — “Home field” advantage came into play, as Monroe earned a spot in a WIAA Division 1 sectional by just two strokes. The Cheesemakers took fourth, claiming the final team spot over Elkhorn in a WIAA Division 1 regional at Monroe Golf Club May 21.
“It was a crazy finish,” Monroe head coach Braden Rindy said. “We thought we were going to barely lose, and then it just all changed in a couple shots. I told the kids it would come down to a stroke or two — it always does this time of year.”
The team shot a season-low score (330) to edge Elkhorn (332) in a bittersweet act of revenge. In 2023, Monroe and Elkhorn tied in the Division 1 Fort Atkinson regional. With three of its five golfers carrying over from last season’s varsity roster, the performance shows the growth of the team.
“We had growth this year through competition,” Rindy said. “We really have seven or eight varsity players that are pushing for those top five spots. This makes practices more competitive and drills more important.”
Monroe moves on to the Janesville sectional at Glen Erin Golf Course where the top two teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team qualify for state June 3-4 at Blackwolf Run Meadows Course in Kohler.
“We’re peaking at the right time, but we know we have to play our best rounds ever to compete for state,” Rindy said.
