MONROE — The Cheesemakers lost a tough dual to Oregon on Sept. 13, the final home match of the season, 6-1.
“Oregon’s singles lineup was really talented and took care of business,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said.
The Panthers not only swept Monroe in the four singles matches — the Cheesemakers won just 2 of the 50 games.
The doubles matches were a different story. Monroe’s No. 3 doubles tandem of Brooke Hanson and Elly Beckman scored a 6-2, 7-5 victory, while the other two Cheesemaker pairs fought valiantly in their losses.
“Brooke and Elly picked up our lone win and continued to play well at 3-doubles, which earlier in the season seemed like it would be a weak spot in our lineup. It was great to see them pick up a win,” Bordner said.
At No. 1 doubles, Sydnee Conway and Allison Wunschel lost 6-2, 7-5, while Morgan Johnson and Grace Versnik fell at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-3.
“We knew that 1-doubles would be a good match, and it lived up to it. We had a 5-4 lead in the second set going into Sydnee’s service game, but kudos to Oregon as they broke our serve and then finished out the next two games to grab a 7-5 second set,” Bordner said. “Morgan and Grace had a better showing for us which I was happy about. We still have some work to do with their ability to attack, but overall, I was happier with their performance.”
