STOUGHTON — The Cheesemakers were swept by Stoughton in boys tennis May 11, but coach Matt Bordner expected his young and inexperienced squad to fair a little better.
“This was a disappointing loss for us,” Bordner said. “I thought coming in we could find a way to win some of the matches, but fell short across the board. As we get deeper into Badger Conference play, we will definitely see tough competition but finding ways to win close individual matches will be important for us.”
Monroe had some close matches, including Miguel Aragon at No. 4 singles, who lost to Collin Williamson 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
“(Miguel) jumped off to a great start with a commanding first set. He actually was up 5-2 in the second set but just couldn’t close the door on his opponent. I was proud of his effort, but I’m sure it’s a match Miguel wishes he could have back,” Bordner said.
Monroe’s No. 3 doubles team of Gavin Eckerman and Mitch Ferguson lost 6-2, 7-6 (4), and the No. 2 doubles pair of Ethan Towne and Chris Giasson fell 6-4, 7-5 in a tight match.
“Our No. 2 and 3 doubles both had competitive matches, but still just have a lot to work on with technique, especially our volleys,” Bordner said. “Overall, I think this match was a nice gut check for us and showed that we need to keep working hard in practice to improve.”
Chris Andraski was swept in the No. 1 singles match by Steven Benoy, 6-0, 6-0. Ryan Mathiason fell to Connor Lyons 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and James Seagreaves lost the No. 3 singles match to Nathan Eppler 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Charlie Frehner and Aaron Roidt came up short to Max Dugan and Hayden Schreier, 6-1, 6-3.
Monroe was back in action May 13 at home against Milton, then was slated to play at the Verona Quad May 15. The Cheesemakers then travel to Oregon May 17 before hosting Monona Grove May 20.
