BH scores statement wins over Marshall, La Follette

WATERTOWN — The top-ranked and unbeaten Warriors made a statement at the Dec. 27-28 Watertown Holiday Shootout — decimating two-time defending Division 3 state champion Marshall and Madison La Follette, a Division 1 school.

In the win over Marshall Dec. 27, the Warriors jumped out to a 42-31 lead at halftime. In the second half, Black Hawk didn’t let up, even as junior star Bailey Butler had to leave the game with a leg injury. The Warriors defeated the fifth-ranked Cardinals 74-51.

Bailey Butler finished with 12 points, but older sister Hannah Butler led all scorers with 25 points. Natalie Leuzinger had 23 and Maddy Huschitt finished with eight.

Marshall’s 6-foot-1 junior center Anna Lutz, who is committed to play at UW-Milwaukee, finished with 17 points. 

In the 62-44 win over Madison La Follette, the Warriors jumped out to a 37-19 lead at halftime.

Leuzinger led Black Hawk with 17 points, while Hannah Butler had 15, Tara Wellnitz 10 and Bailey Butler eight.


Slinger 42, Monroe 31

SLINGER — The Cheesemakers dropped a nonconference road game Dec. 28.

Both teams struggled to find the hoop in the first half as Monroe went into the break trailing 15-12.

Grace Tostrud led the Cheesemakers with 10 points and eight rebounds. Chloe Bunker grabbed nine boards; Grace Mathiason had seven points and seven rebounds; Megan Benzschawel scored seven points and added six rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.

Monroe was just 12 of 53 from the field (22.6%), including going just 3 of 17 from beyond the arc (16%) and 4 of 10 from the free throw line.

Slinger senior forward Anna Breuer, an NCAA DII commit to McKendree University, scored 13 points.

Monroe (3-5, 2-2 Badger South) return to action Jan. 3 with a home game against Monona Grove (8-2, 3-1), then travel to Milton (2-7, 1-3) Jan. 7 before hosting Stoughton (2-6, 1-3) Jan. 10.


Argyle Holiday Tournament

ARGYLE — The Orioles went 1-1 at their own tournament Dec. 26-27.

In the opening round, Argyle blew out Warren 72-31. The next day, the Orioles lost to Highland 50-44.

Maggie Godfrey led the Orioles with 32 points in the tournament — scoring 16 both games. Tori Lantz scored 30 points in the tournament, while McKenzee Granberg finished with 22.


New Glarus 48, Cuba City 42

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights picked up a nonconference win Dec. 30.

Dylan Noll scored 11 points for New Glarus, while Lily Himmelmann had 10 and Brooke Watrud and Jaylynn Benson each scored eight.

New Glarus led 24-15 at halftime.

In other area scores, Brodhead defeated Parkview 61-32 in a nonconference game Dec. 27.
