DARLINGTON - It's not too late for area youth to take advantage of Wisconsin's Hunter Education Program. The course will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5 at the First Banking Center in Darlington from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Registration ends Sept. 20 for the course. Call Dan Syvrud at 776-4188 or Barry King at 482-0191 for more information or to register for the course.

Completion of the course comes just in time for the Youth Deer Hunt scheduled for Oct. 11-12. The hunt is designed to give youth ages 12-15 an opportunity to hunt deer at a time when other hunters are not authorized to hunt with a firearm.

Youth hunters may hunt in all deer management units including those within the Chronic Wasting Disease zone. The only exceptions are state parks and non-quota units.

The bag limit is one buck deer, plus any additional antlerless deer using the carcass tag applicable for the DMU. Earn-a-buck rules do not apply for the one buck.

Youth hunters are required to abide by all other hunting regulations. All youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult age 18 years or older. The adult may not accompany more than two hunters.

Youth Waterfowl Hunt is Sept. 20-21

The Youth Waterfowl Hunt will take place Sept. 20-21 throughout the state, giving young hunters an opportunity to learn from experienced waterfowl hunters. Persons age 12-15 may hunt waterfowl (ducks, coots, moorhens and mergansers) without a license or waterfowl stamp. A hunting permit is required for Canada goose, however.

An adult must accompany the hunter over 18. The adult may not hunt except for geese in the Exterior Zone or the Horicon or Collins Zone if they possess the appropriate Canada goose permit.

The youth hunter must have successfully completed a Wisconsin Hunter Education Course and have registered for the Harvest Information Program. The hunter must comply with all other regulations. The daily bag limit is the same as for the regular season.

There are a couple of important rule changes for 2008 regular waterfowl season.

Despite opposition from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the federal framework calls for a closed season for canvasbacks. Also, the bag limit for scaup (bluebills) has been reduced to one per day for 40 of the 60-day duck season.
