Knights shine under bright lights at Miller

MILWAUKEE - Cam Schwoob did his best J.J. Hardy impression and Warren Howard made like Ned Yost when he pulled the trigger on the suicide squeeze that sent the Glarner Knights back to New Glarus as 7-6 extra-inning baseball winners over Belleville.

The Capitol South rivalry clash took place at the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, Miller Park, Tuesday afternoon. Hitting in the No. 7 hole that Hardy occupies for the Brewers, Schwoob was as cool as a big-leaguer when he laid down the second pitch he saw to bring home Cody Anderson with the winner in the bottom of the eighth inning.

"It was a good bunt up the third base line ... a great bunt," Howard recalls.

Schwoob was 0-for-4 before the at-bat. Equally level-headed was Knights reliever Nick Stuessy, who worked the final three scoreless halves for the Wildcats, fanning one and walking none and allowing just two hits. When it came time to summon the hurler, Howard got on the phone to get him from the Brewers' bullpen.

"It was really cool to see him come out of the bullpen and head out to the mound," Howard said. "Then he was very cool and all around the strike zone," Howard said.

Knights starter Zach Ketelboeter took a hard-luck no decision as he allowed six runs, just two of them earned, as New Glarus (2-2, 2-1 Capitol South) committed six errors. Belleville's Griffin Rear clocked a two-out, 2-run ground-rule double in the top of the fifth as the Knights caught a break with the bases loaded.

"That third run likely would've come around to score," Howard admitted.

New Glarus senior Mitch Keegan went a perfect 4-for-4 and Cody Anderson drove in three runs.

The experience was irreplaceable for both teams, as they also got to use the batting cages but weren't allowed in the locker room.

The experience wasn't just a novelty for the current New Glarus roster as former Knight Wade Hanna got the honor of announcing the game over the public address system.
