NEW GLARUS - After a tough non-conference slate, the New Glarus boys basketball team won their Capitol South opener against Belleville, 61-56.
The Glarner Knights trailed by five entering the final quarter, but they outscored the Wildcats 23-13 in the fourth to get the win.
"I thought we had a great team effort," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "In the fourth quarter we had a great comeback. We were able to get the lead, and we made our free throws down the stretch. That's something we've struggled with this year, so it was nice to see the boys correct that."
Senior Spencer Jones led the Glarner Knights with 20 points. New Glarus also received solid scoring contributions from senior Gabe Noyce (13 points) and junior Caleb Fredrickson (12).
"We had good scoring tonight," Sysko said. "Guys did a good job of finding open guys. We moved the ball in transition."
The victory was the second in a row for New Glarus (3-8). Sysko hopes that the win will give his team confidence as they enter their conference schedule.
"Belleville has some pretty good expectations this year, and this is just a big confidence booster for us to come in and get that first win in conference," Sysko said. "We're 1-0, right where we want to be."
Potosi 56, Pecatonica 43
POTOSI - Pecatonica sophomore Drew Schliem scored 16 points and made five 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Potosi knocked off Pecatonica in a non-conference game, 56-43.
Potosi (8-1) jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter lead and led by 20 points at halftime. Pecatonica (3-6, 0-3 Six Rivers East). Potosi's fullcourt press sparked the Chieftains early on.
"They are very athletic and aggressive," Pecatonica coach Matt Fink said of Potosi.
The Vikings outscored the Chieftains 27-20 in the second half.
"We just shot the ball better in the second half," Fink said. "We rotated better defensively."
