Injury has NG forfeit to Albany

ALBANY - The Albany softball team batted around the order twice in a 13-run second inning, but an injury to New Glarus catcher Kelsey Schmidt forced the Glarner Knights to forfeit.

Albany coach Connie Wunschel said Schmidt was running out a single up the middle and caught first base wrong and hurt her ankle. Since New Glarus didn't have another catcher, the Knights forfeited in the top of the third with Albany leading 14-2.

Sophomore Kaylee Johnson went 3-for-3 to lead the Comets. Albany junior Kaitlyn Schulz had a three-run double in the second.

New Glarus senior Calsea Garbe gave up seven runs on three hits. She walked seven. Fellow senior Nicole Berndt also gave up seven runs on three hits.

"We really wanted to play that game out," Wunschel said. "I wanted to try a few people out at different positions."

Albany (4-9, 3-7 Six Rivers East) closes out the regular season with a doubleheader Monday at Pecatonica. The Comets received a No. 6 seed in the WIAA Division 4 regional and will play at No. 3 seed Argyle Thursday.
