MADISON - The Monroe girls cross country team was sapped by illness and colds and finished sixth at the Badger South Conference meet Saturday, Oct. 19.

Madison Edgewood, ranked No. 1 in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Division 2 poll, ran away with the title 32-60 over Stoughton. The Crusaders had the top two runners including junior Amy Davis, the conference champion (14:37.8), and senior teammate runner-up Courtney Link (15:17.3).

"The girls as a whole did not compete at the level we wanted," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "It just happened to be some very unfortunate timing that we came down with this right at conference meet time. I give a lot of kids credit for trying to fight their way through it. However, when push comes to shove, it's nearly impossible to run an entire 4,000-meter race when you simply can't breathe."

The Cheesemakers took sixth out of seven teams. Monroe freshman Ciara Kaderly finished 10th a personal record time of 16:12.6 to lead the Cheesemakers, which earned her second-team all-conference honors.

"She's such a tough competitor," Hirsbrunner said. "She got out very hard and just hung on. She was up exactly where we'd like to see her with the conference competitors. Ciara just keeps getting better and better."

Monroe junior Alyssa Dale finished 19th (16:42.2) and sophomore Kayla Einbeck was 29th (17:09.8). Dale was just three spots away from earning second-team all-conference accolades.

Monroe freshman Josie Eberle took 38th (17:31.8) and junior Kelley Baumann was 39th (17:36). Monroe freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner, usually the Cheesemakers' No. 1 runner, took 43rd (17:53) after she battled the flu.

"She (Jordan Hirsbrunner) fought it pretty hard, but looking back - we should have pulled her off the course halfway through the race," Dave Hirsbrunner said. "She couldn't get air in the lungs and therefore the legs just wouldn't get going. I give her credit for finishing."

There was also a big blow for the Cheesemakers before the race as senior Nicole Witt had an asthma attack and missed the race.

"That's not the way you want to see a four-year senior end their career," Hirsbrunner said.

Monroe will now gear up for the WIAA Division 2 sectional Saturday, Oct. 26 at Twining Park.
