Herbst carries Warriors to win over Comets

ALBANY - Black Hawk freshman Hannah Herbst scored a game-high 12 points to propel Black Hawk to a nail-biting 34-30 win over Albany Friday.

"It guarantees them a spot ahead of us in the regional," Albany coach Adam Wamsley said. "It came down to who would make more shots in the clutch. Black Hawk made plays when they had to. We played hard throughout the game. We just couldn't get enough shots to fall."

Black Hawk (6-14, 5-6 Six Rivers East) made just 11 of 22 free throws, but were 5 of 8 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

"They made their free throws to ice it," Wamsley said.

Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus added eight points. Albany junior Marley Malkow scored a team-high eight points. With the loss, Albany drops to 4-17, 3-8 Six Rivers East.



Monticello 46, Pecatonica 16

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Monticello girls basketball team got on a roll in the first half and cruised to a 56-16 win over Pecatonica Friday.

Monticello senior Alyssah Kubly scored a game-high 16 points and made two 3-pointers. Monticello jumped out to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter and led by 31 points at the half, 33-2.

Monticello seniors Courtney Leuzinger, Samantha DeVoe and Mackenzie Zanow each added eight points. With the win, Monticello improves to 11-8, 7-4 Six Rivers East.

Pecatonica senior Brooke Johnson scored a team-high seven points. With the loss, Pecatonica drops to 2-18, 2-10 Six Rivers East.



Barneveld 72,

Juda 10

BARNEVELD - Junior Hannah Whitish scored a game-high 17 points to help Barneveld roll to a 72-10 win over Juda.

Barneveld (19-1, 11-0 Six Rivers East) raced out to a 20-3 lead and led by 45 points at the half, 48-3. Barneveld, ranked No. 1 in the Division 5 Associated Press state poll, has now won 39 straight conference games.

Barneveld senior Rachel Slaney added 15 points. Juda sophomore Sara Jordan scored a team-high three points.



Southwestern 49, Darlington 41

DARLINGTON - Southwestern's Niki Berning and Shelly Budden combined to score 28 points to lift the Wildcats to a 49-41 win over Darlington.

Darlington (4-15, 3-9 SWAL) used a 17-9 second quarter run to build a two-point lead at the half. Southwestern outscored the Redbirds 19-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Both Berning and Budden scored 14 points for the Wildcats. Darlington senior Taylor Cox also scored a game-high 14 points. Darlington sophomore Taryn Rankin added eight points. The Redbirds hit three 3-pointers.



Brodhead 63,

Palmyra-Eagle 16

BRODHEAD - Junior Amber Pickel scored a game-high 16 points to help Brodhead roll to a 63-16 win over Palmyra-Eagle.

Brodhead (17-4, 13-2 Rock Valley South) went on an 11-2 run in the first quarter to open up an early lead. The Cardinals built a 23-4 lead at the half and didn't look back. Brodhead outscored Palmyra-Eagle 40-12 in the second half.

Brodhead freshman Erin Nyhus added 11 points and Megan Jacobson scored eight points. Both Kylie Moe and Catherine Hazeltine each chipped in seven points. The Cardinals shot 66.6 percent from the free-throw line (16 of 24).
