Fifth grade

Conditions could not have been better for a big 22-6 win against Sun Prairie for the fifth graders.

Monroe had several shining moments on offense with a balanced running and passing game. Yes, a passing game this year. This is an indication of their football skill sets advancing along. Throwing, catching, pass blocking and route running skills are all getting better. Run blocking looked great at times, but there is still plenty to work on. Running backs blocked and ran the ball very well.

Defense looked good as well. Good, solid heads-up tackling occurred and that is a testimony to their dedication to the tackling drill work during practice.

The kicking game is improving with some good return catches and some better distance on the kicks.

Sixth grade Red

Monroe's sixth grade Red played a defensive battle against New Glarus-Monticello Blue on Saturday. Holding New Glarus-Monticello Blue to less than 40 yards of total offense, Monroe took the win 6-0.

The defense was led by Alex Witt, Brandon Blum, Travis Edmunds, Trevor Hartwig, Shaun Sweeney, Craig Thom, Brady Biba, Patrick Rielly, Aaron Ziolkowski and Derrick Ritschard. Monroe's only touchdown came on a run by Brandon Blum with blocking from Bodie Minder, Dalton Green, Connor Andrews, Alejandro Hernandez and Cory Shafer.

Sixth grade White

The Monroe Blaze sixth grade White team started their 2013 season on the road against Waunakee White on a cool, fall-like day. The cool temperature warmed up quickly by the Blaze players, as they defeated Waunakee 30-6.

On the first play from scrimmage for Monroe, Nick Bansley scampered 60 yards for a touchdown and added the two-point conversion on a 5-yard run. Bansley went on to rush for 209 yards on 18 carries and two more touchdowns on the day.

Monroe was also effective in the passing game. While only throwing three times on the arm of Jared Dillon, two of those passes were completions and the third was narrowly missed on a 15-yard pass to Judson Rikkers. Dillon was 2 for 3 for 12 yards, including a two-point conversion. He also had a 7-yard run for a first down that kept a touchdown drive alive.

Behind an offensive line consisting of Cael Losenegger, Julian Gruber, Deion Hargrove, Darien Hargrove, Dayne Lawinger, Henry Hanson at tight end and later Logan Leuzinger and Noah Becker, the offense racked up 290 yards rushing on 31 carries and 12 yards passing.

Others gaining yards on the day were Tim Beckman with 14 yards rushing and both catches for 12 yards, Rikkers with 60 yards and Mason Seffrood had a tough one-yard run. On the defensive side of the ball, Monroe held Waunakee to 66 yards rushing, 54 of which came on an outside run for a touchdown and 44 yards passing on 11 attempts.

The defensive backfield rotation of Connor Allen, Kyle Haldiman, Becker and Zach Ripp locked down the Waunakee receivers all day. The defensive highlight was a 68 yard-fumble return for a touchdown by Leuzinger after Deion Hargrove stripped the ball from a Waunakee running back. Leuzinger had eight tackles on the day. The Hargrove brothers added seven tackles each and Gruber added six more plus a sack.

On the day, Monroe's defense had 12 tackles for a loss, one sack and three passes defensed. Missing from the game due to injury, but due back next week, were Dusty Gough and Ben Figi. Monroe plays next at Middleton High School against Middleton White on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11:30 a.m.

Seventh grade Red

The Monroe Blaze seventh grade Red team lost their game opener at Pec-Argyle 35-6. Evan Thompson led the team in rushing with 77 yards on four carries and scored one touchdown. Thompson, along with Victor Vasquez, also had six tackles, and Wade Sweeney, Gabe Witt and Kade King had four tackles each.

The next game is home on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Wisconsin Heights at 10 a.m.

Seventh grade White

The seventh grade White team defeated the Sun Prairie Gold 8-0 on Saturday at the YMCA field behind a strong defensive performance.

The Blaze took the opening kickoff and drove 58 yards in five plays, and scored on a 20-yard run by Jordan Montgomery. Anthany Hernandez added the two-point conversion for the 8-0 lead. The game was then decided in the middle of the field by the defenses.

The Blaze threatened again early in the second half but lost the ball on downs. For the game, the Blaze gained 170 yards on 32 runs and completed 2 of 5 passes for 11 yards and had one interception. The Gold gained 13 yards on 13 carries and completed 3 of 17 passes for 26 yards and had one interception. After a strong first half against the run, the Blaze forced the Gold to go almost exclusively to the pass.

The seventh grade White travels Saturday to play Warner Park Purple at 6:15 p.m.

Eighth grade

The eighth grade Blaze team opened their season with a 38-0 win over Belleville.

In the first possession of the game, quarterback Dylan Scace handed off to Brayden Zettle who ran the ball in 65-yards for the touchdown. Dempzy Foley kicked for the extra point.

Tackles by Sam Kind, Brady Buol, Foley, Scace and a recovery by Jevon Gibson contributed to the next scoring drive. Scace handed the ball to Zettle for a 20-yard touchdown. On the next possession, Travis Wolf, Kind and Scace traded off carrying the ball and key blocks by Tyler Leutenegger, Mitch Bartelt, Joe Crubaugh and Kieran Bazley. Scace ran it in for the third touchdown and Foley added an extra point kick.

In the second quarter, Belleville fumbled the ball in the end zone and Foley recovered it for the fourth touchdown. Foley then successfully kicked the extra point. The final touchdown of the game came when Zettle tossed the ball to Wolf who then ran 25-yards for a touchdown. Foley again was successful on the kick.

The eighth grade will host Pecatonica-Argyle Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
