PRAIRIE DU SAC - With multiple players absent for spring break for their game against Sauk Prairie, Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill had to make some position changes and alter his approach in a 4-1 loss to the host Eagles.
"It took some time for our players to get used to playing in different positions," O'Neill said. "Unfortunately some girls were on vacation, so we had to adjust accordingly."
The Cheesemakers found themselves trailing early at the start, as Eagles forward Nyssa Goeres scored two early goals in the first half.
"She (Goeres) is an exceptional player, and perhaps one of the best that we might face all season," O'Neill said. "But we started off a little overwhelmed by their intensity."
The Cheesemakers were finally able to get on the board with a goal by Shyanna Kelly at 25 minutes and 31 seconds. The senior was able to convert on the kick after the assist from sophomore Maddie Kallgren.
But Sauk Prairie responded with another goal of their own as the first half came to a close. The Eagles would score again late in the second half.
"Sauk Prairie is a good and skilled team," O'Neill said. "We fought back there near the end of the first half, but by that time we were already in a fairly deep hole. Their aggressiveness was hard for us to match, but overall I am pleased with our all-around performance. It was a tough game, but we had a very good possession game tonight, which gave us some open looks."
The Cheesemakers (2-1) will host the Sugar River Raiders next Tuesday, April 22.
