Darlington rallies past Cuba City

CUBA CITY - Darlington stayed in the driver's seat for a SWAL championship after coming back to beat Cuba City 21-14.

Darlington junior fullback Myles Leahy rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Redbirds. However, it was the Redbirds' defense that won the game. The Redbirds (6-1, 5-0 SWAL) overcame three turnovers by their offense. After Darlington, ranked sixth in the WisSports.net Division 6 coaches' poll, fumbled late in the fourth quarter, the Redbirds' defense responded. Darlington's Weston Ritchie had an interception that sealed the win.

"Both teams fought extremely hard," Darlington coach Scott Zywicki said. "The turnovers were critical. We really hurt ourselves with the fumbles. You can't have that in a really big game especially the playoffs. They made us earn every inch and yard."

The Redbirds had a seven-play, 73-yard drive in the third quarter that was capped by Leahy's 13-yard TD run with 9:03 left in the third quarter. The big play of the drive was Tanner Wiegel's 35-yard run.

The Redbirds 11-play, 88-yard drive in the fourth quarter, culminated in Leahy's second touchdown run with 4:52 to go.

Edgewood 20, Monroe 6

MADISON - The Monroe football team for most of the first half played an even game with Madison Edgewood.

Monroe trailed just 3-0 deep into the second quarter. The Crusaders scored two touchdowns in the final 4 minutes, 30 seconds of the second quarter and held on for a 20-6 win over the Cheesemakers. The Cheesemakers were short-handed playing without five starters on offense after sophomore quarterback Jaron Kuester injured his shoulder and played without four starters on defense.

"We won the second half 6-0," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "You would have liked to not had that 20-point deficit in the first half and then we could win the game. The kids played hard. We played a lot of underclassmen in the second half."

Monroe junior Cody Wolf rushed for 94 yards on 24 carries and had a 27-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Monroe (0-7, 0-4 Badger South) got strong play from its defense. The Cheesemakers rushed for 170 total yards and limited the Crusaders to just 136 on the ground.

Monroe freshman Tyler Elmer was 3 of 11 passing for 39 yards.

"He (Elmer) managed the game well," Miller said. "He did a nice job of running the offense. He made a lot of plays."

Miller said Kuester is being checked for a possible collarbone injury. He's not sure if he will play next week in the final home game against Fort Atkinson.

"It's too early to tell," Miller said.

Evansville-Albany, 41, Beloit Turner 8

BELOIT - Evansville-Albany senior Isaiah Shell rushed for 83 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils to a 41-8 win over Beloit Turner.

Evansville-Albany (4-3, 3-2 Rock Valley North) racked up 266 total rushing yards. Shell had 17- and 62-yard TD runs to propel the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils forced the Trojans into four turnovers.

Evansville-Albany quarterback Matthew Sperry completed 3-of-4 passes for 48 yards and one touchdown. Sperry hooked up with Kyle Rutkowski for a 10-yard TD pass.

Brodhead-Juda 6, Jefferson 0

JEFFERSON - Brodhead-Juda senior Derek Turner rushed for 59 yards and had a 1-yard TD run to propel the Cardinals to the win.

With the win, Brodhead-Juda (6-1, 3-0) keeps pace with Big Foot in the hunt for a conference championship.

It's the first time Jefferson has been shut out in a game this year and the Cards limited them to 135 rushing yards.
