Cheesemakers, Raiders see seasons come to a close

LODI - The Monroe boys soccer team's season came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Lodi in a WIAA Division 2 regional final on Thursday.

The Blue Devils received a break when the Cheesemakers were called for a hand ball in the box early in the first half. Lodi's Chris Miller scored on a penalty kick at 10 minutes, 12 seconds to put the Blue Devils on the board. Miller scored two goals to lead the Blue Devils to the sectional.

"We started playing really cautious after that," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said. "With our formation and style, we have to play aggressive."

Lodi's Brad Steinbach scored a goal at 14:08 and Matt Bulovsky scored at 35:09 to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead at the half.

"After that our team started panicking," Stamm said of the Blue Devils' second goal.

Stamm said the Cheesemakers had five or six shots in the first few minutes of the second half, but they were not able to score. After the game, Stamm reminded the team of everything they accomplished this year. The Cheesemakers finished 8-7-5.

"We matched the best we have ever done in the tournament," Stamm said of reaching the regional title game. "I told the guys to reflect on the season we had overall."

MOUNT HOREB - Senior Patrick Ruhland scored two goals and added an assist and the Vikings outshot Sugar River 23-2 to claim a 5-1 win over the Raiders in a Division 2 regional final Thursday.

Senior midfielder Otto Kenitz scored the Raiders' lone goal on a penalty kick in the 18th minute to tie the score at 1-1 in the first half, but the Vikings scored four answered goals to pull away from the Raiders.

Mount Horeb advances to the sectional semifinal Thursday agsinst McFarland. Sugar River closes its season with a record of 12-13.
