BELLEVILLE - Jared Carney threw a one-hitter and Brandon Winder scored to help the New Glarus High School baseball team edge Belleville 1-0 Friday night.

Carney gave up the one hit in the first on a single. He struck out 10 and walked none in seven innings.

"He had good stuff tonight," New Glarus coach Chris Rear said. "You could tell from the first inning."

Winder walked to get on base in the fourth inning, advanced to second on a balk and then scored when the Belleville shortstop made an error on a groundball.

"Pitching, and we made the defensive plays we needed to make," Rear said about the keys to the victory. "Out of the 21 outs we had to make 11 plays in the field. Our one error was on an errant pickoff throw in the first. After that we played clean defensive baseball."

The Glarner Knights (2-9) had two hits in the game. New Glarus will host Cambridge on Tuesday.
