MONROE - Monroe High School graduate Colin Burns earned a bronze medal in the USA 2013 Pan-American Championship Games in weightlifting in Venezuela June 27.
Burns, the son of Timothy and Kelly Burns, finished third in the 85 kg weight class of the Snatch. The Snatch is an Olympic lift where the lifter takes the weights from the floor to above the head in one move. He wrapped up the bronze with a lift of 160 kg. While it was not his personal best weight, he said he is pleased to have medaled in his first international tournament.
Burns earned a spot on Team USA at the Arnold Schwarzenegger meet in Ohio in March 2013. It was the only qualifying event this spring for the Pan Am Games. Olympic weightlifting consists of two events - the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk. The Clean and Jerk consists of two moves. The first one requires competitors to lift the weight to the chest and then over the head. Weightlifters have three tries for each lift.
