MARKESAN - The Cardinals advanced to the sectional finals for the first time since 2008 with their straight sets victory over Markesan 25-19, 25-18, 25-12.

Carly Mohns led Brodhead (31-5) with 18 kills and three blocks. Rachel Heller nailed 11 kills for the Cardinals.

"Carly played out of her mind tonight," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "She has really turned it up the last few games. It's not just her volleyball, her leadership and ability to get the other girls to believe in what she does has been huge."

Payton Wright led Brodhead with 15 assists and Kylie Moe had 14. Jordan Halvorsen and Wright were tops in aces with five.

The Cardinals play Wisconsin Heights at 7 p.m. Saturday Nov. 2 at Mineral Point, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

"I'm just so proud of how much heart these girls have and the desire they have to win," Kammerer said. "If we can play the solid ball we played tonight, Saturday will be a great match."

Burlington Catholic Central 3, Monticello 0

BURLINGTON - The Ponies came to life late in the match, but it was too late against perennial contender Burlington Catholic Central, who got the win 25-15, 25-13, 25-23.

With the victory the Hilltoppers, winners of the last two state championships and five of the last seven, are one win away from another trip to state. Marissa Berg had eight kills for Monticello (18-4) and Alyssah Kubly had six.

"I think we were a bit overwhelmed with the situation and the atmosphere," Ponies coach Scott Smice said. "Not to take anything away from Catholic Central, they're a good team, but we didn't pass well and couldn't get the ball to our setters and hitters."

Claire Geitzel led Monticello with eight digs and Clare Bruns had 13 assists. The Ponies loss to Burlington Catholic Central was their first to a Division 4 team all season. The squad finished the year 15-1 against D-4 teams.

"We had a great season," Smice said. "They did something they hadn't done in 15 years (winning a regional championship). We lose five seniors and I'm sad to see them go but the players we will have are very athletic. We'll be a good team again next year."
