DEERFIELD - The Brodhead-Juda wrestling team had three champions en route to a second-place finish at the Deerfield Scramble on Saturday.
The individual champions included sophomore Brady Colden at 160 pounds, senior Hunter Colden (170) and sophomore Gavin Baade (182). Random Lake edged the Cardinals for the title 636-633.
"Going in I was hoping we would place top three," Brodhead-Juda coach Tim Colden said. "It's too bad we couldn't get those other three points throughout the day. I was really happy with the effort.
"I thought Hunter would probably have a good shot. Gavin has wrestled great all year."
Brady Colden went 4-0 and posted two pins. Colden is now 32-4 this season. He defeated Random Lake's Jordan Houpt in a technical fall 16-0. Colden then pinned Milwaukee Vincent-Brown Deer's Pietro D'Amato in 2 minutes, 27 seconds and Lake Mills' Jack Neuers in 3:42. He capped off the unbeaten tournament by defeating Milwaukee Brady Tech-Carmen's Mouhamed Fall 6-4. Fall, ranked ninth in Division 1, was a state qualifier last year.
"He definitely brought his A game," Tim Colden said. "Hopefully, it will carry over to the conference tournament next weekend."
Brady's brother, Hunter Colden (36-0), continued his unbeaten season by winning four matches. He was dominant in the tournament posting three pins. He opened the tournament by pinning Cedar Grove Belgium's Greg Wenzel in 1:29. Hunter Colden then pinned Martin Luther's Sam Zehnder in 1:01 and defeated Random Lake's Adam Risse 14-3. He capped off the tournament by pinning Milwaukee Bradley Tech-Carmen's Rasbhawn Herron in 2:51.
Tim Colden is not worried about Hunter trying to go undefeated this season.
"He just has to take it one match at a time," Tim Colden said. "He has always had that mentality that the most important match is the next one."
Baade (20-4) pinned Brookfield Central's Robert Rossmiller in 1:25 in his first match. He defeated Random Lake's Jesse Verbanac 15-2 and won a double overtime match 5-3 over Milwaukee Brady Tech-Carmen's Maurice Lowe. In his final match, Baade defeated Cedar Grove-Belgium's Matt Krier 13-2.
Brodhead-Juda sophomores Reave Lincoln (220) and Logan Maurer (heavyweight) each finished 2-2 in the tournament and took third place. Sophomore Justin Sangermano (113) also took fourth place.
Brodhead will host the Rock Valley Conference tournament at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. Evansville, which beat Brodhead-Juda in the dual, will be one of the top contenders along with the Cardinals for the title.
"I don't know if we are the favorites," Tim Colden said. "I think we will be in the mix."
