MILTON - The Monroe boys basketball team remained unbeaten after rolling to a 54-28 win over Milton Friday.
Monroe (4-0, 3-0 Badger South) jumped out to a 14-8 first quarter lead and led by nine points at halftime. The Cheesemakers broke the game open in the second half behind a solid defensive game and outscored the Red Hawks 15-3 in the third quarter.
"Defense always gives us a chance," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "Offense can be hot or cold."
Monroe senior Bryan Tordoff scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Cheesemakers. Fellow senior Michael Barrett scored 10 and senior Damian Penniston added nine.
Despite the 26-point win, Murphy still sees areas the Cheesemakers must get better at on the court. Handling the ball strong and making smart decisions on the offensive end will remain a focus.
"We have to find ways to get some early offense," Murphy said. "I thought we turned the ball over a little too much and our rebounding wasn't up to par."
Monroe will play a non-conference game at Darlington Monday.
"Darlington, with the new division alignment, they may have as good of a shot as anybody to make a run to state in Division 4," Murphy said. "I hope the game helps both teams. We are in for a heck of a battle."
Darlington defeated Southwestern Friday, 71-56. to remain unbeaten.
