BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Panthers' pace too slow at start to get past Ponies

JUDA - Tuesday was the wrong time for the Juda Panthers to struggle in the first half. Juda scored 11 points in the first half at home versus Monticello, only to cut the Ponies lead to three with a minute to go. Then Monticello senior D.J. McGowan delivered a 3-point dagger and the Ponies held on for a 55-46 Six Rivers East boys basketball victory Tuesday night. "We probably played the poorest first half of basketball we've played all year," Panthers head coach Andy Werner said. Monticello (8-4 overall, 6-1 Six Rivers East) got offensive production from all over with J.T. Meier and Jacob Edge leading the way with 14 points apiece. Ryan Fink added 10 and McGowan eight in the victory. "That's their team, they're very balanced," Werner said. "You can't focus on one guy." The Panthers (7-5, 3-4 Six Rivers East) got 19 points from Kurtis Mansfield, but only four other players scored.

BLACK HAWK 52, ARGYLE 37 The Warriors are going to make anyone pay if they can't be fundamentally sound. Black Hawk routed Argyle in the second half behind a 23-10 third quarter as the Orioles (3-9 overall, 1-6 Six Rivers East) struggled to find their position underneath the basket. "They beat us on offensive rebounds and we didn't close out on shooters," Orioles head coach Travis Erickson said. Alex Abraham and Taylor Goodman killed Argyle, as both hit two 3-pointers to extend Black Hawk's (12-1, 6-1 Six Rivers East) lead. "We tried to make the adjustments, but still couldn't figure it out," Erickson said. "We made poor decisions all night." Andy Bohlman and Chris Shambrook both had 10 to lead Argyle.

BARNEVELD 51, PECATONICA 50 The Vikings are closing the gap against the Eagles. After a 50-47 defeat on Nov. 30, Pecatonica (5-5 overall, 3-4 Six Rivers East) nearly nipped Barneveld (8-3 overall, 5-2 Six Rivers East) on Tuesday. Drew Moen had 15 and Kaleb Feller had 10 for the Vikings, who trailed Barneveld 38-36 going into the final quarter. Trent Sullivan led Barneveld with 18 points and Patrick Clerkin and Kyle Thompson both posted a dozen in the home victory. All of Thompson points came from beyond the arc.

WATERLOO 55, NEW GLARUS 43 Next time around, the Glarner Knights must be less charitable with the Pirates. Waterloo (8-3 overall, 3-2 Capitol South) went 17-for-26 from the free-throw line to keep New Glarus (5-6 overall, 2-3 Capitol South) at an arm's length in the Pirates' victory. Gatlin Bibow had 21 points and was 5 for 5 to lead Waterloo. Cassidy Flannery scored 11 for New Glarus.
