SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk junior Colby Argall was a man on a mission Friday night.
Argall had four touchdowns and senior teammate Brody Milz had five scores to power Black Hawk to a 68-15 hammering of Iowa-Grant in a WIAA Division 7 Level 2 playoff game at Murphy Field.
"It's big," Argall said of the win. "Playing a bigger team from a bigger conference, we wanted to come out and take it to them."
Black Hawk (11-0) scored on all nine of its drives. It was a dominating performance for the Warriors, ranked No. 3 in the WisSports.net Division 7 Coaches Poll, who rolled up 347 total rushing yards. With the win, Black Hawk advances and will host Potosi-Cassville (9-2) in a state quarterfinal game next week.
"The offensive line did a great job of blocking and we scored on all nine of our possessions because of it," Argall said. "We did everything we wanted tonight."
Milz rushed for 131 yards and had five touchdowns and Argall rushed for 104 yards and had four scores.
The Warriors' defense set the tone early on. Iowa-Grant's 6-foot, 6-inch tight end Keaton Durni bobbled a pass from quarterback Ross Havlik over the middle on the game's opening drive. The ball popped into the air and Milz came up with the interception. Moments later, Milz broke away on a 56-yard TD run and ran in the two-point conversion to give Black Hawk an 8-0 lead.
The Warriors had three interceptions in the game, with senior Michael Flanagan coming up with two picks. The Panthers also had four turnovers on downs in the first half. Facing fourth-and-7 from their own 44-yard line in the first quarter, Havlik's pass was incomplete, and the Warriors' offense went to work again. A few plays later, Argall scored on an 11-yard run. Milz powered in on a two-point conversion run to give the Warriors a 16-0 lead with 6 minutes, 52 seconds left in the first quarter.
"We represented our conference well," Milz said. "We just keep working hard and making plays. Everyone really wanted this one."
Iowa-Grant went 1-for-5 on fourth down attempts and had two onsides kick attempts come up short. The gambling nature of the Panthers was expected.
"I think obviously you could tell as coaches what kind of confidence they had in their defense and it showed," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said. "We worked hard at not jumping offsides on their hard count and we talked about how they like to go for it on fourth down in practice this week. Advance and conquer. That's what it's about."
Iowa-Grant senior running back Brady Peat, who entered the game with 2,020 rushing yards and was averaging 201 rushing yards per game, was stymied and limited to just 41 yards on 26 carries.
"We took a really good back out of the game," Cory Milz said. "Any time we shut down what they want to do it puts a little bit of doubt in their kids' heads. I'm really happy with how we played on defense. We played IG's base run really good. They slipped a couple of fullback runs in there on us and they had some runs on us in the spread. That is something we will have to take a look at."
Havlik hooked up with Matthew Winders on a 25-yard TD pass late in the first quarter to cut Black Hawk's lead to 16-7. That is as close as the Panthers would get as the Warriors ripped off 52 straight points.
Black Hawk had a seven-play, 54-yard drive, culminate in Argall's 11-yard TD run to extend the lead to 24-7. Flanagan picked off a pass at the end of the first quarter to set up the next score, which came on Argall's 5-yard run to extend the lead to 25 points early in the second quarter.
The Warriors' defense also had two sacks. Junior Kyle Lovelace had one and senior Jett Rufenacht and junior Mitchell Quinn combined on the other sack. Rufenacht blocked a punt later in the second quarter and sophomore Avery Baumgartner caught the ball in the end zone for a touchdown on special teams to give the Warriors a 38-7 advantage.
Before the end of the first half, Milz rammed in for another 7-yard TD run, then Flanagan connected with Milz on a 30-yard TD pass, and lastly Argall had a 1-yard TD plunge late in the second to give the Warriors a 56-7 lead at the break.
Black Hawk cashed in on a nine-play, 53-yard drive to open the third quarter when Milz punched in a 4-yard TD run. Lovelace had big runs of 24 and 16 yards on the drive that extended the Warriors' lead to 55 points. Black Hawk sophomore Jaylen Rufenacht capped the scoring with 23-yard TD scamper.
The Warriors now must gear up for a rematch against Potosi-Cassville, which they defeated 30-12 in Week 2.
"Potosi-Cassville is a very good team," Brody Milz said. "They have been scoring 50-some points per game like us. It's going to be a dogfight. I'm looking forward to it."
