MONROE - The Monroe Senior Legion baseball team didn't leave anything in Mother Nature's hands Monday night.
Monroe (6-4) completed a sweep of Evansville, bashing its way to a 21-8 win in a suspended game from June 22; and then rolled to a 12-2, five-inning win in the night cap.
Monroe's Tyler Malcook went 6 for 9, with seven RBIs, in the sweep. He helped Monroe put the finishing touches on the first game when he blasted a grand-slam home run to left in an 11-run seventh. Monroe's Drew Nafzger drove in five runs in the two games and pitched a gem in the second game.
Nafzger tossed a one-hitter and went five innings to get the win. He struck out seven and walked six. He gave up just one earned run.
"It was nice to see the momentum from that suspended game carry over," Monroe coach Eric Losenegger said. "I couldn't be happier with the way we swung it as a team tonight."
Monroe scored five runs in the first of the second game and led 8-1 after the third. Monroe pounded out 16 hits and had four players with multi-hit games. Austin Burandt went 3 for 3 with one RBI, Malcook was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Mitchell Riese was 3 for 4 with two RBIs; and Mitch Marty was 2 for 4. Nafzger and Kevin Klopfenstein each drove in two runs.
Monroe's Kris Rieder was right in the middle of breaking out the first game. With two outs in the sixth, Rieder bunted for an RBI single to give Monroe a 10-8 lead.
Monroe put the finishing touches on Evansville when they batted around the order in an 11-run seventh. Mitchell Riese reached on an error and Kramer Henning, who had two hits in the inning, singled to right. Matt Woodstock then came through with an RBI double. Nafzger delivered a two-run double. Malcook came through with the big blow when he crushed a grand slam that gave Monroe an 18-8 lead.
Rieder cruised on the mound pitching three shutout innings in relief to get the win. He struck out six and gave up just one hit. In between starts, Losenegger just wanted Rieder to throw a few pitches.
"He threw 32 pitches. It was like a bullpen session for him," Losenegger said. "He was dialed in."
