BLANCHARDVILLE - No one had to tell Barneveld sophomore Carson Carmody that he was flirting with a no-hitter in the sixth inning Monday.
Pecatonica senior Tanner Kleppe poked an RBI single to right field to break up Carmody's no-hit bid. However, Carmody was stellar in leading the Golden Eagles to a 14-1 victory.
"It (the no-hitter) was going through my mind," Carmody said. "I didn't want to think too much about it and let it affect my pitching. I was frustrated when I gave up that hit."
Carmody frustrated a lot of Vikings hitters. He pitched seven innings and gave up just one run on two hits. Pecatonica freshman Drew Schliem singled in the seventh for Pecatonica's other hit.
Carmody cruised early, retiring seven straight batters and 16 of the first 17 he faced. He struck out eight and walked two.
Barneveld (11-2, 9-2 Six Rivers East) did most of its damage in a six-run third. J.J. Cory led off the third bouncing a single to left off Pecatonica starting pitcher J.J. Hogan.
The Eagles scored all six of their runs without hitting the ball out of the infield. Barneveld sophomore Dustin Hodgson hit a grounder to Pecatonica third baseman Jake Scoville. Cory beat Scoville's throw to second. Cole Breuer then beat out an infield single. Hogan walked in two runs, hit a batter with the bases loaded and Devon Schult beat out an RBI infield single to help the Eagles take a 5-0 lead. Hodgson went 2-for-4 and Carmody was 1-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Eagles.
"You want to limit the damage in an inning like that," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "We didn't do that. We gave them extra baserunners. He (Hogan) had trouble finding the plate as the inning went on."
Four Vikings pitchers walked 11 and hit two batters. Hogan pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on three hits. He walked three, struck out three and hit one. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 5-7 overall and 4-6 in the Six Rivers East.
"We didn't play very well on defense," Strommen said. "We struggled with our control."
Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz said players are told at the beginning of the year to hustle everything out.
"We will be watching and if they don't hustle they won't be playing," Schmitz said. "Our hustle is what breaks people."
Barneveld, which has been to state three of the last five years, had its 36-game conference winning streak snapped after a doubleheader loss to Potosi last week.
"We have made some adjustments on defense to go with kids with more range," he said. "Our defense is awfully good right now. We pride ourselves on our defense."
It's the start of a stretch of three straight games for the Vikings. Pecatonica will play at Albany today and then will play against New Glarus at Miller Park on Wednesday. The Pecatonica softball team also will play New Glarus in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
"Tomorrow we will play and we have to forget about it," Strommen said of the loss to Barneveld. "We have to learn from what we did wrong and get better. It will be a neat experience for them to play there (at Miller Park)."
