The Monroe High School junior varsity hockey team traveled to Milwaukee Saturday to start the season with a doubleheader.
In the first game Monroe squared off against the Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin's (SHAW) Varsity team, losing 5-2.
Monroe was down early 3-0 in the first period, working on getting their timing. Tyler Kothe opened the scoring for Monroe with a shorthand goal and then Kramer Henning scored an assist form Kothe to close the gap. SHAW would score twice more to win 5-2, with Kyle Bruce stopping 28 of 33 shots.
In the second game that day, the Avalanche played Shaw's JV team and recorded their first win 6-2. Monroe got early with three goals from Henning with assists to Jordan Graber, Skyler Stingley, and Kothe. Jason Atkinson would also tally two goals with assists from TJ Parrent and Mitch Koch. Kyle Bruce had 15 saves.
On Sunday playing in Monroe, Monroe played Kenosha's JV team and rallied for a 3-1 win. Monroe trailed 1-0 after the first period and came back with three unanswered goals. Henning would score two goals with Kothe getting an assist. Chris Priebe also scored with assists from Joel Henry and Stingley. Monroe would be outshot 30-17, with Bruce stopping all but one shot with an excellent performance by the defense of Michael Kohn, Kyle Williams, Eric Ganshert, Jason Johnson, and Koch.
Monroe JV's next game is Saturday at home at 3 p.m.
