STEVENS POINT - Two local students were among the 32 senior students attending Wisconsin schools who have been named winners of the 2010 WIAA Scholar Athlete Award, presented by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.
Jamie Armstrong, Monroe, and Katie Place, South Wayne, earned the Scholar Athlete Award.
That brings the number of young men and women honored for scholastic and athletic excellence since the program was launched in 1984 to 796.
This year's 16 boys and 16 girls were recognized at an award ceremony May 2 at the Westwood Conference Center, Wausau. For the first time, the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award program will be underwritten by Marshfield Clinic. Featured speaker was Larry Hisle, retired centerfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers. A former two-time MLB All-Star, Hisle is currently employed with the Brewers as the Manager of Youth Outreach and is president of Major League Mentoring, a youth mentoring program in Milwaukee.
Every year, each of the WIAA-member high schools is invited to nominate one boy and one girl for Scholar Athlete honors. There were 726 nominations - 361 boys and 365 girls - for the 2010 statewide award from 386 schools. To qualify for the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award, a nominee must have earned at least four varsity letters through the first half of his or her senior year and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. This year's nominees in four WIAA categories include 184 from 96 schools in Division 1; 195 from 101 schools in Division 2; 193 from 103 schools in Division 3; and 154 from 86 schools in Division 4. The divisions are the same as those used by the WIAA in basketball and volleyball tournament participation.
At the awards ceremony, each 2010 WIAA Scholar Athlete received a medallion and certificate, and took home a special plaque for display in their school's trophy case.
All of the other students nominated will be presented with a medal at their school recognizing the achievement of each as their school's top male or female scholar athlete.
