LA CROSSE - There weren't many options for Albany senior Drew Mather to beat the heat at the WIAA Division 3 State Track and Field Championships Friday.
Mather finished fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 5.11 seconds at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Stadium. Darlington freshman Tyson Miehe took 12th (10:37.05) after going into the state meet with the best time.
"It feels like it was worth it baking in the heat," Mather said. "I didn't want to go out hard and die like some of the kids did. Today, I didn't PR, but I'm happy with the finish."
Friday's temperatures in La Crosse tipped the scales at 93 degrees.
The Redbirds' 3,200 relay team of Kent Miehe, Tyson Miehe, Destin Komprood and Connor Roche finished fifth place with a time of 8:24.64. Roche as a senior relished the chance to run the anchor leg for a medal in his last chance at state.
"We don't have that one big stud to finish it off," Roche said. "We all run about 2:05. I knew when I got the baton in fourth place I was in good shape. I just wish I could have run 0.3 seconds faster and we would have beat that other team (Wild Rose) for fourth.
"We finally did it. We are on the podium."
Rosholt set a blistering pace and won the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:07.88. Albany, which came in with the fastest time in the event, finished seventh (8:25.62) and just missed a medal behind sixth-place Reedsville (8:25.25).
"We got so far behind after the first and second lap," Albany coach Tony Brewer said. "We knew the other three guys had a lot of ground to make up. We felt like we were ready coming in. We just didn't have enough left for the second laps."
Albany freshman Bailey Hlavachek finished sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:22.57. University Lake School junior Molly Seidel, who won her third state title in the 1,600, set a Division 3 state record in the 1,600 with a time of 4:51.54. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Kendra Sigg took eighth (5:23.55) and was passed down the stretch for a medal.
"In the end I wanted to put everything I had into it so I put it all out there," Hlavachek said.
Hlavachek had to control her emotions in her first state track meet.
"I was so nervous at the start of the race," Hlavachek said. "I learned you can't go out too fast. If you go out too fast, it will kill you in the end."
The Six Rivers Conference will be well represented in the boys 400 today. Pecatonica-Argyle senior Lucas Stoehr took first in the preliminaries (:50.52) and Monticello senior Reid Zanoya was second (:50.67). Stoehr and Zanoya enter the finals with the top two times.
"I want to run a sub 50-seconds," Zanoya said. "If I win tomorrow, I will be the first Monticello state champion. I have a lot riding on this."
The Darlington boys 1,600 relay team of Matt McDaniel, Cedric Flesher, Mitchell Langkamp and Alex Erickson finished second in the preliminaries (3:30.13) to advance to the finals. The Redbirds' 800 relay team of Cody Erickson, Langkamp, Flesher and Alex Erickson finished fourth in the preliminaries (1:33.60) to advance to the finals. Pecatonica-Argyle took eighth in the 1,600 relay (3:35.93) and will also advance to the finals.
The Darlington girls 1,600 relay team took fifth to move on to the finals. Darlington sophomore Cassidy Cambers tied Royall's Hailey Brown for seventh in the high jump and just missed medaling.
Black Hawk freshman Jen Wellnitz took fifth in the preliminaries of the 100 and will advance to the finals. Senior teammate Rachel Rygh finished 12th (:13.41) and just missed advancing. Rygh finished eighth in the preliminaries of the 200 (:27.83) to advance to the finals.
The Warriors' 400 relay team of Alyssa Piefer, Wellnitz, Taylor Werren and Rygh finished 11th in the preliminaries (:52.21), which was less than a half a second away from the last qualifying spot for the finals that went to Pardeeville (:52.01).
