Absentee not their double-fault

MONROE - It'll be on the Monroe Cheesemakers' tennis team to not put an asterisk next to its monumental win over Madison Edgewood Friday evening.

Monroe's singles players got off a bit light as the Crusaders' top player wasn't able to make the trip to Green County for the Badger South dual.

"In all fairness...that would have made a difference," Monroe coach Jim Bartholf admitted.

Just the same, Monroe (6-3, 5-1 Badger South) took care of the shuffled lineup, winning three of the four singles matches and the No. 3 doubles matchup to pull out a historic win.

At least in recent memory.

"A great win for Monroe," Bartholf said. "We haven't beat Edgewood in four or 5 years. It's been a long time since Monroe has defeated a good team with three single wins."

Matt Le dug deep to take care of his No. 2 match with Matt Wilson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Artem Bralgin got stronger as his No. 3 match with Graham Hicken went along. He solved Hicken to the tune of a 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory and Dan Becker knocked off Connor Lagman in No. 4 play, 6-3, 6-3.

Carson Root didn't benefit terribly from drawing a temporary No. 1 in Austin Papenthien as he was routed, 6-1, 6-1.

Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn gave Monroe continued steady play at the No. 3 doubles level as they defeated Tim Morgan and Scott Wilson, 6-2, 6-3. The senior duo of Matt Turek and Levi Jannsens labored through a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Dirk VanRyhroek and Phil Paradise in No. 1 play. Mark Hoesly and Jim Kundert lost a hard-fought battle with Dan Meicher and Pat Lagman, 6-4, 7-5.

Monroe's Junior-Varsity unit also won, 5-2. The Cheesemakers host their eight-team doubles tournament this morning at 9 a.m.
