Neil H. Pehl, 81, of Freeport, IL passed away Monday, October 1, 2018 at home after a battle with prostate cancer. He was born August 30, 1937 in Woodford, WI, the son of Henry and Ella (VanMeter) Pehl. He was a 1955 graduate of South Wayne High School and enlisted into the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He traveled the world aboard the USS WASP aircraft carrier. While home on furlough in 1957, he met his Judy who he adored, and fell in love. They were married on September 23, 1961. He was a devoted, wonderful husband and father. Along with farming, he was a professional, meticulous paint contractor.
He is survived by his wife, Judy (Stietz), son, Michael (Dianne) of Freeport, daughter, Debra of Madison, WI, grandchildren Courtney and Hayden, sister Joyce Steinmann of Argyle, WI, brothers Glen of Charlotte, NC and David of Harlingen, TX.
Neil was predeceased by his parents, brother Don, and 3 nephews; Larry and Randy Steinmann, and Robert PehI. Neil was fun loving and loved by all. He adored his many nieces and nephews, who always called him their “favorite Uncle”. He will be missed by his granddog, Cooper. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10th at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 410 W. Lena St, Lena, IL. with Rev. Andrew Skrobutt officiating.
