Leon F. Brunner age 85, of Monroe died Tuesday July 31, 2018 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on August 13, 1932 to Fred and Letha (Ellis) Brunner in Dubuque, Iowa.
On July 12, 1942 he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and remained an active member of the Monroe Congregation until his death. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1952. Leon married Jean E. Goakey on October 9, 1954 in Monroe. She died on November 2, 2005. Leon was a devoted husband and loving father to their three children.
Leon was employed at Gempler Tire for 22 years, retiring in 1979. He then joined his wife in the business she started in 1972, Brunner’s Upholstery. He especially enjoyed working on antique and show cars. He always looked forward to seeing cars displayed at Cars on the Square and Kundert’s Short Stop.
Leon and Jean loved to travel to visit family and friends. He shared his wife’s fondness of fishing in northern Wisconsin. But his greatest joy came from telling people about the blessings that God’s Kingdom will bring to earth and sharing his hope of the resurrection with nursing home staff and friends that visited.
He is survived by his children Fred (Cheryl) Brunner and Richard (Angela) Brunner, son-in-law David Hauser, all of Monroe, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean, daughter Sue in 2016 and a sister Shirley in childhood.
A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Monroe at 3:00 P.M. Sunday September 2, 2018 with Robert Haesler of the Benton Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses presiding. The family will greet friends at the Kingdom Hall beginning at 1:00 P.M.
