Larry Lee Nelson, age 84, of Albany, WI, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison after a long battle with cancer. The only son of LeRoy and DeVerda (Parrott) Nelson was born in Atlantic, Iowa, on September 28, 1935. Larry graduated from Corning High School in Corning, Iowa in 1951. He attended Iowa State University from 1951-1954 majoring in Agriculture/Animal Husbandry. A member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, he was proud of awards he received as a member of the livestock judging team. Larry married JoAnn (Mudry) Nelson on February 12, 1966 in Aurora, IL.
Larry was a lifelong farmer, first working as a herdsman for Angus farms in New York and Illinois. He then bought a dairy farm in Wisconsin and milked cows for 24 years. After his retirement from milking, he started raising hogs, sheep, and beef cattle while also working at Ogden Industries/Chromalox in Albany.
Larry enjoyed raising and breeding Shorthorn beef cattle, Suffolk and Hampshire sheep, Hampshire hogs, Holsteins, and spoiling many special cats and dogs. He loved listening to old-time country music, polka dancing, watching and talking about college football and basketball together with the NFL, especially the Green Bay Packers. A dish of ice cream was always his favorite meal.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, JoAnn, daughters Lisa (Jon Ischi) Nelson-Ischi, Lori (Chad Schaalma) Nelson Schaalma, and Leslie Nelson; grandchildren Quinlan Nelson (21), Audrey Ischi (17), and Joe Ischi (15).
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private Celebration of Larry’s life and commemorative tree planting will be held later.
