Doris was born on Sept. 28, 1929, to Stanley and Margaret (Parkinson) McGranahan in Doris’s beloved township of Fayette. She was born and raised on her family farm there where she attended the Cook School, a one-room schoolhouse, for 8 years. Doris then attended Darlington High School and graduated in 1947. After graduation, she attended Beloit Business College, and later the Fennimore Vocational School.
She met her husband, Richard McGinnis, at a Darlington Firemen’s Dance and they were married on June 28, 1952, at Holy Rosary Church in Darlington. Doris worked as the secretary at the business she and her husband Dick owned and operated, McGinnis Insurance and Real Estate, from 1952 to 1993.
Doris was very involved with, and helped raise funds for, the Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in the early 1950s. She was a long-time member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, serving as president of the Catholic Daughters of America Court. She was also a member of the church council and the Council of Catholic Women, and delivered Meals on Wheels for her parish. Additionally, she enjoyed her time as a member of the Lafayette County Shamrock Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Lafayette County Home & Community Education Program. Doris was known for her elegance and class and had a knack for hosting and catering special occasions for family and friends.
Doris is survived by nieces Pat (McGranahan) Stauffacher and Kris (McGranahan) Glanzman both of Darlington; also by these special people: Candi (Steve) Fitzsimons and Jeremy (Colleen) Williams, Darby (Daniel Lewis) Fitzsimons, Sadie (Trevor) Johnson, Wylie Niles, Zach McGranahan, Marty (Allison Horne) Williams, Brad (Bernie) Ostby, and many other nieces and nephews.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley “Barney” McGranahan and Margaret (Parkinson) McGranahan; husband, Richard “Dick” McGinnis; brother, Billy (Betty) McGranahan; nieces, Nanci (McGranahan) Ostby and Sally (McGranahan) McDermott; nephew, Larry McGranahan; as well as these special people: “sisters” Jeanne McGowan; a great-niece, Penny (McKernan) Niles; and a nephew-in-law: Sam Glanzman.
Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian burial which will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023 at 11:30 am at Our Lady of Fatima (Holy Rosary) Parish in Darlington. Friends may call on the family Monday, August 28, 2023 from 9:30 am. until 11:15 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. A rosary will be prayed at 9:00 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
