Charles H. Sleep, 89, of Darlington, WI passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Edenbrook of Platteville in Platteville, WI. He was born April 11, 1932, in Darlington, to Harry and Mildred (Godfrey) Sleep. Charles was a lifelong resident of Darlington, working for his father at Sleep's Drug Store before owning and running the business himself. Combined they ran the business on Main Street for 51 years.
Charles is survived by his son, David (Debra) Sleep of Lexington, IL; two granddaughters, Megan (Aaron) Kupferschmid of Morton, IL and Hannah Sleep of Madison, WI; two great-grandchildren, Adeline and William Kupferschmid of Morton, IL; and one sister Janice (Jim) Ronnerud formerly of Darlington, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
While he had many interests throughout his life, he had an especially keen interest in Darlington history. He told many stories about local people and activities through his Sleepwalking column published in the Republican Journal for many years, offering a unique look into life through all periods of Darlington's history. His other main interest was model railroading and he created a large layout in the basement of his home featuring recreations of many local destinations. He was also an avid Redbirds and Badgers fan, cheering or cursing as the game demanded.
Charles was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church where his funeral will be held on November 8, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. There will be no visitation per his wishes.
