MONROE - Write-in favorite Rob Schilt has informed Monroe City Clerk Carol Stamm he intends to serve as a member of the Monroe Common Council.

Schilt, a native of the city, began a last-minute campaign to fill the fifth vacant seat on the council after no registered candidates stepped forward. He won as a write-in with 66 total votes over two others who were not included on the official ballot. Write-in votes for Donna Douglas, American Legion Auxiliary Post 84 president and executive director of the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, totaled 55. Thurston Hanson, who served as Ward 7 alderman from 2008 to 2012 until he was defeated by now Mayor Louis Armstrong, received 34 total votes.

Stamm said Schilt will be sworn in as a member of the Monroe Common Council on April 18. His term as alderman will be for one year. If Schilt seeks re-election in spring 2018 and secures a seat on the council once more, he will serve a two-year term before returning to the ballot.
