Walmart staying on schedule

MONROE - The new Walmart Supercenter is still on schedule, with an expected grand opening date of late August or early September, according to Lisa Nelson, senior manager of public affairs for Walmart.

Whether Walmart will hit its end-of-summer target depends now upon the weather for the remainder of the winter.

"We had a couple of setbacks because of the weather, and related to the rock they ran into," Nelson said Tuesday.

Corporate Construction LTD, the general contractors, reported the project is "shaping up," Nelson said.

Nelson expects customers will be surprised to see the new Walmart facade, updated since its Planned Unit Development first was approved by the Monroe City Council in December 2007.

Hank Gempeler, attorney for the Walmart PUD, received approval from the city plan commission last month for color changes to the new store's roof and brand logo.

The company has dispensed with the forest green roof. The white star used as the hyphen in the name and the brand name's blue background also now are pieces of history.

The new store front and signage will feature a palette of warm browns. The Walmart brand name is no longer hyphenated and is followed by a goldenrod yellow star burst.
