WAUKESHA - The Monroe Times earned numerous first-place and other awards at this year's Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation annual Better Newspaper contest.

"What it really comes down to when producing a quality newspaper is the staff," said Carl Hearing, publisher of The Monroe Times. "We're the smallest daily newspaper in the state of Wisconsin, with limited resources, yet these honors demonstrate just how much we're able to accomplish.

"These awards prove that our peers in the newspaper industry see the results of our hard work and talents," Hearing said.

Times photographer Anthony Wahl earned four first-place awards in photography. He took top honors in All-Around Newspaper Photography for his body of work throughout the year.

His photo essay titled "Faith, Farming and Perseverance," which documented the story of farmers Phil and Renee Porterfield, earned a first-place in both the Feature Photo and Photo Essay categories.

Wahl also won first place for Spot News Photo for "Storms Leave a Trail of Damage" from June 17.

Additionally, Wahl earned a third-place award in Sports Photo for "Cards State-Bound" for a photo about the Brodhead girls' first trip to state in March 2014.

Mark Nesbitt took second-place in Sports News Story for "Warriors Capture Gold" about Black Hawk football's state championship game.

Tom Holm also earned a second-place award for his feature story "Committed to Each Other" about George and Algreta Schutte of Monroe.

The Monroe Times advertising team of Steve Allen, Diane Albright, Tai Ruegsegger, Mae Burke and Laura Hughes took second place for Best Multiple Advertiser Spread for the "Shop Locally" initiative.

Hughes took third place in Innovative Online Advertising for "Figi Insurance Agency Stateline 411."

The advertising staff also took fourth place for Best Advertising Special Section for "Light Your Way/Church Section."

Hughes and Jaime Tran, ad design manager, earned a fourth-place award in Best Niche Publication-Out of Paper for the "City of Monroe 2014-2015 Parks and Recreation Program Brochure."

Awards were presented at the WNA's annual convention and banquet in Waukesha Friday. Awards are granted by circulation size, with The Monroe Times competing in the small daily category.
