JUDA - A Monroe man and a Walworth County man were killed in a head-on two-vehicle crash on Wisconsin 11/81 just east of Juda early Friday evening.
Israel Lara, 37, Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene. Arthur W. Hafferkamp, 85, rural Sharon, was transported to Monroe Clinic hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The accident occurred at 5:21 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, about one-half mile east of Bagley Road in Spring Grove Township.
A 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by Hafferkamp was eastbound on Wis. 11/81 in the westbound lane, according to the Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud. The vehicle crashed head-on into the westbound 2000 Chevrolet pick-up Lara was driving.
There were no passengers in either vehicle. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
Skatrud said it's unknown why Hafferkamp was traveling in the wrong lane. Both vehicles were traveling at or near highway speed. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
Traffic was diverted for more than two hours while deputies investigated the crash scene.
Sheriff's deputies, Juda Fire and First Response, and Green County EMS responded to the scene. Brodhead Police and Juda Fire personnel diverted traffic while the investigation was under way.
The crash is Green County's first and second traffic fatalities of 2012.
