MONROE - Truman's Ridge, a four-member Chicago-area based band, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St.
The Truman's Ridge performance is billed as a high-energy, classic style show complete with all the excitement of the early days of bluegrass.
Truman's Ridge is reminiscent of the bluegrass bands from the past. Their two and three-part harmonies are precise, and at times the music has a strong rural-gospel inspiration. Instrumentally, the band shows the influence of Midwestern string bands, along with Chicago jazz and blues on its interpretation of traditional bluegrass arrangements.
In early 2008, Bruce Wallace and Steve Starver decided to start their own traditional-style bluegrass band. Musicians Doris Clayton and Mark Fowler were soon added to complete the foursome, and the name Truman's Ridge was chosen. In 2009, their first CD titled "Tru-Blue" was recorded. At the end of 2009, Clayton left the band and Evan Flower soon joined the group. They continued writing new songs and performing all across the Midwest.
They recorded their second CD, "Long Way Home" in 2010. In June of 2012, Evan had to leave the group and Truman's Ridge new bass player, Greg Heintz, joined the group.
"Cold Cold Feeling," the third CD from Truman's Ridge, was released in 2012. It contains seven original songs and seven cover versions of classic bluegrass tunes. It includes two new instrumental numbers, covers of Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, and Bob Dylan, bluegrass "love" songs, four gospel numbers, make this CD a must have both for fans of traditional bluegrass and listeners interested in new indie bluegrass music.
The members of Truman's Ridge are Wallace (banjo, harmonica, bass harmony vocals); Sarver (guitar, lead vocals); Fowler (mandolin, fiddle, tenor harmony vocals); and Greg Heintz (upright bass).
